Victoria Sponge with Blackberry & Sloe Gin Jam

Yum
When it comes to cake, sometimes you just can't beat the classics. And by 'the classics' I'm referring to two  things specifically - the first is not a thing, its a person - the one and only Mary Berry. The second is the Victoria sponge. A cake that suits any occasion and mood.

Review: The Blue Bell Inn, Rothley

Yum
I love a good country pub but it’s rare to find one which ticks all the boxes. The Blue Bell Inn recently opened in Rothley (literally round the corner from home) and we'd heard only good things. So, I was excited to finally get there for dinner with lovely friends and fellow bloggers Emily and Charlotte last week to see whether this could be the one that ticks all those boxes.

Grillstock & YHA - Meat, Music, Mayhem in Bristol

Yum
It seems like forever since we were at grillstock and I can't believe I only just got round to this post! For those of you who don't know - the Grillstock festivals in Bristol and Manchester are basically dedicated to meat, beer and music. BBQ lovers unite over the best ribs, pulled pork and beef of their lives! We went to the Bristol festival at the start of the month with two friends and ate our own body weight in meat, drank all the bourbon and beer we could manage and basically had a fabulous time!

Last week was the BBC Good Food Show Summer at Birmingham's NEC and as usual I was there with Mummy Bites by my side. This year we were there on the Friday - here is my round-up!

Meal Planning Monday w/c 16 June

Yum
A perfect end to the weekend.. PJs on, house nice and clean. A quiet peaceful  Sunday night. And, for the first time in a long time I've even had time to pull together a meal plan. With work taking up a lot of time for both of us, we've been eating later and later so I've planned meals which are simple and healthy and can be prepped in advance or don't take too long to cook!

Monday

Lemon Chicken and Cous Cous - a recipe from one of my favourite slow cooker books Ultimate Slow Cooker.  I've browned the chicken and started the sauce tonight so all we need to do tomorrow is get it out the fridge, set the timer and go to work!

Tuesday

Lamb steaks with new potatoes and salad. This is so simple and really tasty. Lamb steaks are delish just sizzled on the griddle with a bit of olive oil and a good crack of black pepper and maldon sea salt. I've got some nice baby sundream tomatoes and some fresh red chillies so I'll also throw together a quick salsa on the side too.

Wednesday

The hubby will have to fend for himself as I'm off for dinner with a couple of lovely fellow bloggers. We are trying out the new Blue Bell Inn in Rothley. I'll report back soon!

Thursday

Smoked Mackerel Salad - this is a recipe we first had in a Hello Fresh box and its something we have quite often. To be honest, its a good way of getting the hubby to eat fish! Lambs lettuce, radish, smoked mackerel and new potatoes. So fresh and yummy and surprisingly filling.

Friday

We have some mince in the freezer so I'm planning to make chilli & brown rice. When I was at the BBC Good Food Show earlier this week, I picked up some chipotle rub from Spicentice  and I think its going to add a really nice smokey flavour to the dish!

Weekend

That seems like a long time away from now but I'd like to try and do some baking on Saturday and then we're out sat night for a 30th birthday. Sunday - who knows!! That's a long way away!

What are you eating this week? I'd love to see your meal plans! I'm linking up with Mrs M's Meal Planning Monday. It's a great place to find inspiration and ideas for what to cook! Go and take a look!

Chippy Tea? Try the Time and Plaice, Rothley

Yum
As much as I love fine dining, the treat of going out for a really posh meal and all that goes with it - dressing up, starting with a glass of fizz and all the rest, sometimes all you want is something comforting and homely which isn't going to break the bank. Lets face it, the one thing which ticks that box for most of us is a bag of good old fish and chips..

On Thursday night, Mum and I were booked in for dinner at a local gastro pub but after perusing the menu and some disappointing service, we decided to finish our glass of prosecco and head somewhere else. We had a bag of chips in mind from our favourite local chippy Rothley Fisheries but once we got there, thought we might sit in at their little restaurant next door Time & Plaice.

Grilled Aubergine Linguine with Chilli, Chorizo & Sundried Tomato

Yum
Its been a crazy couple of weeks. We're both mad busy at work at the moment and the last few weekends have been filled up with family birthdays and a mega trip to Bristol for grillstock (more of which later). So, with all of this in mind, last week, we did something a little bit indulgent and a little bit naughty. We ordered a Hello Fresh box.
