*Meatcure in Leicester has now closed*

One of the more recent independent places to open in Leicester is Meatcure – a trendy burger joint just around the corner from the Highcross shopping centre.

I attended their launch in the summer and enjoyed myself but wasn’t sure just how good the food was as I didn’t get to try anything other than one small slightly over done burger. To be fair to Meatcure, I blame this more on the Leicester tigers rugby team blocking the waitresses route from kitchen to where I was stood. But that said, it marred my expectations enough to continue choosing the rather fabulous (and also independent) Crafty at St Martins coffee house for my burger hit. I have to say, after this recent visit, my assumptions were wrong, this place is fabulous!

We arrived on a damp Tuesday to find the place three quarters full and a welcoming smile from the waiter. Although neither of them were there on this occasion, I’ve worked with both the general manager Warner, and one of his team Callum, previously and they are both fantastic fun people. I’m sure with them manning the place, customer service will be bang on! A relatively unassuming entrance makes way to a trendy long narrow space with woodchip tables, exposed brick and industrial fittings along the bar. It’s hip and it knows it. Being there = instant cool.

We ordered the house buffalo wings with our burgers as a kind of starter. The sauce was nice but the wings themselves were a little underwhelming. My advice? Save the room for those epic burgers because oh my god, you’ll need it. We were both feeling a little under the weather and you know what they say – feed a cold. We near on rolled out the door we were so stuffed by the end of the meal!

Dave ate the Rocky Balboa from that weeks specials. As per usual, I was sidetracked by the food and forgot to take notes so I can’t tell you exactly what was in it What I can remember is that it had …three.. yes THREE types of meat in it – beef patty, streaky bacon and some kind of shredded or pulled chicken along with cheese, lettuce and sauce. What a greedy boy!
I had the Smokey & the Bandit  – a beef patty, melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, smoked streaky bacon, caramelised onions, house mayo, mother sauce. The burgers are priced around the £10 mark, give or take a couple of quid either way, and come with pickles and chips.

Honestly, the burgers were a delight, soft well seasoned beef with that american cheese which is reminiscent of a Maccy D’s – in a good way – and the most beautiful brioche buns, direct from the glorious Emerson & West’s in Market Harborough (home of their first restaurant). The chips were seemingly endless and the pickles were sharp enough to cut through the meat and cheese. I really reallly enjoyed my food and am definitely going to head back soon. Meatcure – I apologise for my initial views, you’ve got my heart now.

Before we finish, the drinks are worth a mention.

We had two of the alcholic milkshakes – one with amaretto and one with bourbon and they were gooooood. The drinks menu is pretty impressive all around. I also enjoyed an aussie ginger beer. Fancy trying Meatcure for yourself? They have restaurants in Leicester, Market Harborough and now Leamington Spa. Follow them on instagram and twitter for some truly mouthwatering burger porn!
