Spreegold, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin

Burgers at Spreegold, Prenlauzer Berg, Berlin

Have you ever walked into a place and just fallen in love with it? I want to take a giant forklift truck to Berlin and lift Spreegold from its corner on Schonhauser Allee & Stargarder Strasse in Prenzlauer Berg and drop it right down on my doorstep.

We clocked this place right at the start of our recent trip to Berlin as it was almost directly opposite our apartment in Prenzlauer Berg but we didn’t end up visiting until the last day. We went for breakfast and loved it so much we returned the same night for dinner.  I’m not sure if I’m right or not but I seem to think that Berlin is well known for burgers. Anyway, after 4 days of solid traditional German fare, we definitely fancied a good burger and chips.

Despite looking up a few places, it turns out that at Spreegold, we’d hit gold, excuse the pun. The first thing that struck me about this bar/ cafe was its bustling atmosphere. On our breakfast visit, the place was heaving but still maintained an air of cool and calm, full of trendy types eating muesli and drinking coffee.

On return at dinner time, the lights were dimmed and music turned up a notch. The order of things had switched from self to table service but still very casual. The vibe worked perfectly for the mix diners and drinkers (some on coffee, some on alcohol). I particularly loved the menu design – photography and illustration hand in hand. Busy styling felt right against the simplicity of the space we were sat in – dark grey walls, simple wooden tables and chairs and low lighting. I loved it all!

A great place for inspiration, I love watching Dave doodle his illustration ideas.

As I’ve mentioned already, we both went for burgers (although the menu included steaks, salads and pasta). My burger was one of the specials – a beef patty with coriander mayonnaise and pumpkin. Dave had the blue cheese burger (my all time favourite) and it was slathered with creamy Gorgonzola.

We were pleasantly surprised to be asked how we wanted the burgers cooking – given the issues burger restaurants are having now in the UK due to new guidelines on how they should cook their burgers. Given that we were in a place where ingredients, seasonality and sourcing are key, we felt confident to ask for ours medium – rare. We’d made the right decision – the meat was well seasoned and tasty.

My burger was delicious (the pumpkin was a success although quite juicy) but I had some serious envy for the blue cheese burger being wolfed down in front of me. Really, is there any burger combo better than beef & blue cheese? I think not. Still – at least I had the upper hand when it came to health points (ahem). Both burgers were full to bursting with the beef patty and extras plus red onion, lettuce & fresh tomato. They also came with coleslaw and the yummiest rosemary roasted wedges. Once those wedges were gone, I was running my finger around the pot to get the salty rosemary bits out. Yum!

I think the biggest surprise for me was that they didn’t use brioche for their buns. Shock horror! Very welcome as I’ve fallen victim to the soggy brioche bottom more than a few times here at home. I know brioche is mighty trendy at the moment but having eaten such a good burger at Spreegold in a seeded white bun, I do wonder if the end is nigh? The sesame seeds on top just added the magic final touch too. For two burgers and two beers, we paid 38 euros which I think is incredible value.

This place is achingly cool and full of locals – the menus were all in German and the staff were friendly but slightly less tourist savvy. We got there in the end though and will definitely be returning to the Prenzlauer Berg Spreegold next time we go to Berlin. 1. I have been told again and again (for well over a decade) that Berlin is a super destination for a long weekend or even a week, and yet I've never been. Looks like what I have heard about excellent food options is spot on too!

  2. This looks like a great place and great burger! I love Coriander mayo and combo of gorgonzola with a beef patty, and it's good that they didn't go for a brioche bun, seems like a kaiser roll? Though personally I like an American diner style squishy bun, but brioche indeed doesn't cut it, becomes soggy!

  3. Haha! What are the chances? Did you go to this one in Prenzlauer Berg or another? They have a few across the city I think. We really enjoyed the atmosphere both in the day and the night – a sign of a great happy place I think!

I'll be heading over to your blog today for a read too 🙂
