Potato Head Beach Club, Bali

You might have heard of Potato Head Beach Club. There are several of them around the world – in Hong Kong, Singapore, Jakarta and pictured here: Bali.

It’s a fun place to hang out, listen to music, dance, drink, swim and enjoy the views. As so—an avid supporter of all things fun—I was pleased to be able to spend an afternoon at their original site in Seminyak on our recent Bali trip.

The space features three restaurants, two bars, an infinity pool (with a bar in the middle) and a beach which disappears straight into the Indian Ocean. There are plenty of places to sit and enjoy the views – from the grassy area to the poolside deck chairs to the rather luxurious beachside loungers.

Guess who got one of those beachside loungers? Yep… it was meeeee!!

Beachside lounging
Having just spent a week sleeping in a cheap and cheerful open air Balinese villa with no air con and eating at local warungs, I have to say that Potato Head Beach Club was something of a shock to our senses! We picked out our best outfits and rocked up in time for a late lunch and an afternoon of cocktails and relaxation.

Before I launch into just how great this place is, I do want to point out one thing which really irritated us. On arrival, a doorman checked our bags (fine) and then told us we had to pour our water away because we were only allowed to drink water purchased inside the beach club. I think it’s terrible that we weren’t allowed to take our own water in and the bin was filled with wasted bottles of water. Fortunately, we had our own bottles but still, a total waste and not fair given how hot it gets in Bali.

Water issues aside, we were impressed with the Beach Club which was crescent shaped and looked out over the lawn, pool and beach. The frontage is mostly open plan to make the most of the breeze and the views and there are a couple of dining options for different budgets (including fine dining Kaum which we ate at and reviewed).

The day we were there it was busy and seating was limited. Fortunately, we had a beachfront lounge area reserved and were soon enjoying seaside views with the club behind us. As the afternoon drifted by we enjoyed several *hic* cocktails and relaxed as the sun came down.

For me, this place was at it’s best after the sun went down. The vibe changed from somewhere to be seen to somewhere you really want to be. A live DJ pumping out tunes and tasteful lighting made it feel like we were at an exclusive party. I half expected to see Rhianna dive-bomb into the pool.

Although this isn’t the type of place I find myself at often, I have to admit we had a really great time. If you’re like me and enjoy the party vibe once in a while but are definitely NOT on a ‘Brits abroad’ rampage this is probably a good option. If you want the loud, tacky nightlife of Benidorm, I’d say jump in a taxi and head into nearby Kuta.

It’s free to visit Potato Head Beach Club but do bear in mind that drinks and food are a little more expensive than you’d pay elsewhere in Bali. I’d probably budget around £50-60 for 3-4 drinks and a light lunch there.

  1. Why on earth is it called Potato Head? That alone is making me giggle like a hyena! Looks like a nice place but that water wasting issue is horrible, in today's world of limited resources, it's really a big black mark!
